Sunny noon, inverter drops out: grid overvoltage

Usually it’s the street, not the inverter.

When many homes on one street export at noon, the local grid voltage rises. Above the limit, the inverter must switch off. In South Australian data, homes seeing more than 253 V went from about 10 % to about 32 % as local PV rose from under 10 % to 40–50 % of homes.

EN 50549-1 default settings: above 253 V (+10 %) the inverter disconnects within 3 s; above 264.5 V (+15 %) within 0.2 s.

What to do

Don’t just raise the limit. Log the voltage at the meter, then talk to the grid operator. Change the threshold only after the grid operator agrees.
